For nearly 200 years, the name Laguiole has been associated with a distinctive type of rustic, but extremely high quality cutlery, especially knives. Laguiole itself is a village in the Aveyron region of central France, but a number of factories in the surrounding area also produce these knives and, now, full cutlery and flatware sets. Because the name “Laguiole” is not legally protected, in recent years, knock-offs from countries such as China and Pakistan have come onto the market. However, the genuine French article is heavier and its craftsmanship more refined. Laguiole cutlery is characterized by riveted handles with a decorative bee (though some say it’s a fly and some a cicada, the symbol of Provence).
